Jason Momoa's Lobo in 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow'
Jason Momoa's debut as Lobo in the teaser trailer for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has captured attention.
Although brief, the scene features Momoa as Lobo walking towards a building with a backdrop of destruction, suggesting he may appear after Supergirl's intense fight scene.
The description of Momoa's Lobo's appearance is very accurate to the comics, with chalk-white skin, black markings around his eyes, wrist chains, and his signature cigar.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the comic book series of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
Interestingly, Lobo's character doesn't appear in the original comics, making his role in the film an intriguing mystery.
However, James Gunn, co-founder of DC Studios, has hinted that Lobo will play a larger role than initially anticipated in the overall DCU storyline.
Peter Safran, another DC Studios chairman, added that Jason Momoa was very enthusiastic about playing Lobo, saying Momoa was ready to "crush it" on set.
Jason Momoa's Journey to Becoming Lobo
Jason Momoa has expressed his desire to play Lobo for a long time, even while still actively playing Aquaman in the DCEU.
His strong passion for the character finally came to fruition under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.
Peter Safran shared an interesting anecdote about how Momoa landed the role.
The day Gunn and Safran were announced as heads of DC Studios, Momoa immediately sent them both a text message, simply contained the word "LOBO" in all caps, followed by numerous exclamation points.
Momoa himself has stated that Lobo has been his favorite character since he was a child and collected comics.
He felt the role was "perfect" for him, given Lobo's unique personality and style.
Lobo: DC Comics' Brutal Antihero
Lobo is a fictional antihero who first appeared in comics published by DC Comics.
Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, he debuted in Omega Men #3 in June 1983.
Initially introduced as a villain in the 1980s, Lobo was revived as a bounty hunter in the early 1990s.
Lobo originates from the utopian planet Czarnia, and in a 1990s retcon, he is the sole survivor of his race.
This is because he personally wiped out the entire Czarnian population using scorpion-like creatures as a science project, for which he received an "A" grade.
The name "Lobo" itself in Czarnian roughly means "he who devours your entrails and enjoys it immensely."
Lobo's popularity skyrocketed in the 1990s, largely thanks to Simon Bisley's distinctive art style, which gave him a rough and rebellious aesthetic.
At the time, Lobo was intended as a parody of the "grim and gritty" antihero trend like Wolverine and the Punisher from Marvel Comics.
Ironically, however, he was enthusiastically received by fans of that trend, making him a pop culture icon in comics.
Lobo's Personality and Powers
As an interstellar bounty hunter and mercenary, Lobo is known for his mindless violence and intoxication.
Killing is often an end in itself.
However, despite his rough and brutal nature, Lobo maintains a strict personal code of honor and rarely breaks the terms of an agreement he has made.
His only rule is: once he accepts a contract, he will complete it unless a counter-contract with a higher payout is offered.
Lobo is also depicted as arrogant and egotistical, focused almost entirely on his own personal pleasure.
He is such an extreme antihero that he was banned from both heaven and hell after his death, effectively making him immortal.
Lobo's powers and abilities are incredible and make him one of the strongest characters in DC Comics:
- Super Strength: His strength is undefined, often comparable to Superman. He is capable of lifting over 100 tons and even destroying entire planets.
- Super Durability: Possesses incredible durability, making him nearly immune to injury and fatigue.
- Healing Factor (Regeneration): Able to recover from mortal wounds, immune to aging and disease.
- Immortality: Due to being barred from the afterlife, Lobo is functionally incapable of death.
- Genius-Level Intellect: Despite his brutality, he is a genius for destruction, capable of creating complex viral agents and their antidotes.
- Tracking: A master tracker with superhuman senses to track prey across the universe.
- Multilingualism: Fluent in over 17,897 languages from across the galaxy.
- Combat Expert: Proficient in hand-to-hand and armed combat.
- Weaponry: Uses a variety of advanced weapons, explosives, and his trademark chains and hooks.
