Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Jason Momoa officially stepped down from the Helldivers film adaptation being developed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions in early June 2026.

This news was confirmed by several leading media outlets, including Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.

This decision comes just months after Momoa's involvement in the project was announced in February 2026.

The exact reason behind the actor's departure has not been publicly disclosed.

Jason Momoa has previously established a track record in video game adaptations by starring at the 2025 film Minecraft, which grossed $960 million worldwide.

He will also appear as Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter adaptation, scheduled for release on October 16, 2026.

The Development Still On Going

Despite losing Jason Momoa as its lead star, the Helldivers film project is still actively moving forward.

Sony Pictures is currently working on finding a new lead actor to fill Momoa's shoes. The film remains scheduled for a theatrical release on November 10, 2027.

The film's production team remains solid. Justin Lin, director known for his work on the Fast and Furious franchise and Star Trek Beyond, remains attached to helm the project.

Lin will also serve as a producer through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner.

The screenplay was written by Gary Dauberman, who previously worked on It and its sequel, as well as the game adaptation Until Dawn.

Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions also serve as producers.

Helldivers Announcement and Development

Development of the Helldivers film was announced by Sony in January 2025, after the massive success of Helldivers 2.

The project was officially unveiled at last year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and presented to audiences at CinemaCon earlier this year.

The Helldivers game franchise itself began with the first Helldivers in 2015, a cooperative twin-stick shooter.

Players take on the role of an elite unit tasked with protecting the fictional planet Super Earth and defeating alien threats in an intergalactic war.

The Success of Helldivers 2

The sequel, Helldivers 2, was released on February 8, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC.

The game quickly became one of PlayStation's most successful franchises, selling over 12 million units on PS5 and PC in its first four months after launch.

This makes it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game of all time.

As of October 2025, the game had sold 19.4 million copies across all platforms, and reportedly surpassed 20 million copies in January 2026, with its release on Xbox in August 2025 contributing to the success.
