Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Stellantis, the parent company of the Jeep brand, announced the recall of more than 1.3 million Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles worldwide in June 2026.

This recall follows the discovery of a serious fire risk in the 2021 through 2025 model years, as reported by Car and Driver.

The issue centers on an electrical connection in the electric hydraulic power steering pump (EHPSP) wiring harness, which could cause overheating.

Specifically, the recall covers approximately 787,887 Jeep Wranglers and 289,112 Jeep Gladiators in the United States.

These vehicles were manufactured between June 24, 2020, and December 2, 2024, for the Wrangler, and August 18, 2020, and December 2, 2024, for the Gladiator.

The total number of affected vehicles in the U.S. is approximately 1,076,999.

Outside the United States, approximately 106,000 affected vehicles are located in Canada, 23,000 in Mexico, and approximately 125,000 in various global markets.

This fire risk can occur even when the vehicle is parked with the engine off, as faulty electrical connections can experience high resistance, causing the wiring to overheat and potentially ignite surrounding materials.

Primary Cause and Scale of Global Recall

Stellantis' investigation revealed that the primary problem stems from a power steering pump header manufactured outside of specification tolerances.

This condition can cause the terminals to spread when the wiring harness is installed, reducing the likelihood of a proper electrical connection, which creates high electrical resistance, generating enough excess heat to melt the connector and ignite surrounding materials.

Affected vehicle owners may experience initial symptoms such as a loss of power steering assist or the appearance of a "Service Power Steering" diagnostic message on the dashboard.

This recall covers 2021-2025 Jeep Wranglers manufactured between June 24, 2020, and December 2, 2024, and 2021-2025 Jeep Gladiators manufactured between August 18, 2020, and December 2, 2024.

Overall, this recall covers more than 1.3 million vehicles globally, including approximately 1,076,999 vehicles in the US, 106,258 vehicles in Canada, 23,704 vehicles in Mexico, and 124,297 vehicles in other international markets.

Investigation Timeline and Impact

Stellantis, through its operating unit FCA US LLC, first initiated an investigation into the issue in May 2023.

However, in April 2024, the company decided not to conduct the recall due to its perceived "low incidence."

The investigation was reopened in August 2024 following an increase in incident reports.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also initiated an independent investigation in September 2024.

In April 2026, FCA US confirmed that loose electrical connections could indeed cause the connections to melt and lead to vehicle fires.

As of May 18, 2026, Stellantis had recorded 63 customer support reports, 72 field reports (of which 35 were confirmed to be related to the faulty header), and 12 other service records related to this issue.

Recommended Steps and Solutions

As a precaution, Stellantis advises owners of affected vehicles to park their Jeeps outdoors and away from structures or other vehicles until repairs are made.

If owners experience a loss of power steering or a “Service Power Steering” warning, this is a strong indication that their vehicle may have this issue.

The repair will involve inspecting and, if necessary, repairing or replacing the affected wiring harness or electric hydraulic power steering pump.

Stellantis is working to expedite the availability of the solution and anticipates having the repair available by July 2026.

Dealer notifications are expected to be sent around June 11, 2026, while owner notification letters are scheduled to begin mailing on July 9, 2026.

Owners can check if their vehicles are covered by this recall by visiting the NHTSA.gov website and entering their vehicle identification number (VIN), which will become searchable on June 11, 2026.
