Michael Tilson Thomas's death was caused by glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer he had battled for several years.

His battle with the disease has been a public event since his initial diagnosis in August 2021.

Known as MTT, he was widely recognized for his extraordinary contributions to the advancement of classical music, both through his leadership of various renowned orchestras and his dedication to educating the next generation of musicians.

Michael Tilson Thomas was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 21, 1944.

Throughout his life, he dedicated himself entirely to the art of music, making his mark as one of the most influential figures of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In August 2021, Tilson Thomas publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme.

He immediately underwent surgery to remove the visible portion of the tumor, followed by radiation and chemotherapy in an effort to combat the disease.

Despite a valiant fight, in February 2025, Tilson Thomas announced the sad news that her brain tumor had returned.

His passing followed the death of his husband, Joshua Robison, on February 22, 2026, at the age of 79.

The two had been together for 50 years and officially married on November 2, 2014, sharing the joys and sorrows of their lives.

A Brilliant Legacy in the Orchestral World

Michael Tilson Thomas recognized as Music Director Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, Conductor Laureate of the London Symphony Orchestra, and Co-Founder and Artistic Director Laureate of the New World Symphony.

For 25 years, from 1995 to 2020, Tilson Thomas served as music director of the San Francisco Symphony.

He was also the founder of the New World Symphony, an orchestral academy in Miami Beach, Florida, established in 1987.

Previously, he served as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1988 to 1995.

His early career also included positions as music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic (1971–1979) and principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1981–1985).
