FDA Announces Recall of Zapp's and Dirty Potato Chips: Potential Salmonella Contamination

Utz Quality Foods, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, Inc., has issued a voluntary recall these chips.

The recall was announced on May 4, 2026, in response to potential Salmonella contamination.

This precautionary measure was taken after Utz received information that the dry milk powder seasoning used in the products potentially contained Salmonella.

While there have been no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of the recalled chips, the company urges consumers to immediately discard the affected products.

This recall covers products distributed nationwide in the United States.

Utz Quality Foods is taking proactive action by recalling a limited number of Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips.

This decision follows a notification that dry milk powder used as a seasoning, sourced from California Dairies, Inc. and supplied by a third party, was potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

Although the affected batch of seasoning had tested negative for Salmonella prior to use, Utz still chose to issue a recall.

This is a voluntary measure demonstrating the company's commitment to food safety.

This recall includes nine varieties of salty snacks from two major Utz brands.

Consumers are strongly advised to check their products at home and not consume the varieties listed below.

The recalled products were sold in retail stores across the United States.

• Zapp's Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (60 count), 1.5-ounce size. (UPC: 83791010144) with "Best by" dates: August 3, 2026, August 10, 2026.
• Zapp's Big Cheezy Potato Chips, 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce sizes (UPC: 83791192208 and UPC: 83791192246)

2. Dirty:

• Dirty Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, 2-ounce (UPC: 83791520148) with "Best by" dates: August 3, 2026, August 10, 2026.
• Dirty Maui Onion Potato Chips, 2-ounce (UPC: 83791520162) with "Best by" dates: August 8, 2026.
• Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips, 2-ounce (UPC: 83791520094)

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause a serious infection in humans, known as salmonellosis.

Common symptoms include fever, diarrhea sometimes with blood, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

These symptoms usually appear 12 to 72 hours after a person is infected with the bacteria.

The groups most vulnerable to severe Salmonella infections are young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Consumers who have the recalled potato chips should immediately discard them and do not consume them.
