God of War: Santa Monica Studio Announces Remake of the Classic Greek Trilogy

The God of War Greek trilogy has been announced by Santa Monica Studio, bringing Kratos back with modern graphics.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Santa Monica Studio, the developer behind the immensely popular God of War game series, has announced exciting news for its loyal fans.

In celebration of the franchise's 20th anniversary, the studio has officially announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy set in Greek mythology.

The announcement was made on February 13, 2026, during Sony's highly anticipated State of Play presentation.

The remake project will encompass three iconic titles: God of War (2005), God of War II (2007), and God of War III (2010).

All three games will be thoroughly updated for modern platforms, with the first two previously PlayStation 2-exclusive titles finally available to a wider audience.

The announcement also brings another surprise: the return of Kratos' original voice actor, T.C. Carson, for this ambitious project.

The Beginning of the Franchise: God of War (2005)

Development of the first God of War game began in 2002 under the working name "Dark Odyssey" by Santa Monica Studio.

The game was first unveiled to the public at SCEA Santa Monica Gamers' Day 2004.

Released for the PlayStation 2 on March 22, 2005, in North America, God of War quickly garnered critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, immersive sound, deep story, and brutal yet satisfying gameplay.

David Jaffe, the game's director and creator, was inspired by titles like Onimusha and the 1981 film Clash of the Titans, as well as Heavy Metal magazine.

The development team had the freedom to modify Greek myth for a more dramatic narrative.

Continuing the Kratos Saga: God of War II (2007)

The success of God of War sparked the development of a sequel, first hinted at by the words "Kratos Will Return" at the end of the first game's credits.

God of War II was officially announced at the 2006 Game Developers Conference (GDC) and released for the PlayStation 2 on March 13, 2007, in North America.

During the development of this sequel, David Jaffe assumed the role of creative director, while Cory Barlog, the lead animator on the first God of War, took over as game director.

Barlog and his team made the strategic decision to release God of War II on the PlayStation 2, despite the imminent arrival of the PlayStation 3, due to the PS2's significantly larger player base.

The Peak of Greek Mythology: God of War III (2010)

The development of God of War III was first mentioned by Cory Barlog at the God of War II launch event, and was officially announced at the 2008 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

The game was released for the PlayStation 3 on March 16, 2010, in North America, bringing the Greek mythology trilogy to an epic conclusion.

Stig Asmussen, who previously served as lead environment artist and art director on the previous two games, took over as game director after Cory Barlog left Santa Monica Studio in the first eight months of development.

The budget for God of War III reached $44 million USD, with a development team of 132 people at the end of the project.

Significant new features include an updated camera angle, allowing players to control Kratos while the camera pans away during major battles, and a first-person camera view for the final sections of certain boss fights.

Technologies such as morphological anti-aliasing (MLAA) were also added to improve visual quality and reduce frame rates, with development taking approximately three years.
